Bruce Ling, Michigan's 2001 State Mandolin Champion, is an excellent improviser in a number of styles. A good example is this first-take rehearsal recording of the Charlie Poole tune, Leaving Home.

Bruce, Rebecca Shilt and I were experimenting with different approaches to this piece, including this one with a Travis-style bass line. The recording is a little rough, but Bruce's playing is so cool that I'm posting it anyway.
