Jason and Burt, my nephews and best music pals, spend many Saturdays here. In exchange for a few pointers on bass and guitar, they provide in-depth lessons in music appreciation. Last week's was an analysis, complete with recorded examples, of the relative merits of Ella Fitzgerald ("great singer") as contrasted to the oeuvre of Smash Mouth ("good singer, cool writer, great sound").

Quite a while ago, the guys asked for a recording of this piece. However, since that request, they have discovered the original recording by Mississippi John Hurt, so we'll soon learn the extent of these young critics' charity towards this old uncle.
